From Silence to Self Determination

“From Upstream to a Pioneering Future” – A CDM Sergeant’s Wife

The story of a CDM Sergeant’s wife offers a deeply personal reflection of the realities faced by many families who have chosen to stand against military rule. Her journey shows how resistance is not only expressed through public action, but also through everyday decisions to rebuild and move forward.

Having lived within the strict and controlled environment of military compounds, her decision to join the Civil Disobedience Movement marked a significant turning point. With that choice came uncertainty, displacement, and the loss of financial stability. Seeking a way forward, she joined People’s Goal’s “Pioneering for the Future” and International Humanitarian Law trainings in Mae Sot.

Through these programs, she gained both humanitarian awareness and practical business knowledge. Today, she manages a small family business, gradually creating stability for her household. Her journey reflects a shift from restriction to self determination, showing how access to knowledge and skills can open new possibilities even in displacement.

Her story also highlights the role of families in sustaining the revolution. While often unseen, their resilience allows the movement to continue over time. By supporting individuals like her, these initiatives help build everyday forms of stability that contribute to broader people-led change.
